   Studies in environmental impact assessment, EIA, aim at evaluating the suitability of projects with respect to environmental quality.
The purpose of this proposal is to organise a network of researchers, laboratories, planning authorities and private partners to contribute to the:

  1. development and improvement of methods for the assessment of geomorphologic impacts and their integration into EIA procedures;
  2. development of procedures for the assessment of the impact of transportation projects on the surrounding environment;
  3. recommendation of optimal techniques applicable within a European context through dissemination of research results;
  4. training of young researchers within the network;
  5. development of a co-operation between academia and public administration based on applications in case studies of local relevance;
  6. development of methods for the application of computer techniques to database management, spatial data analysis and cartographic representation in relation to 1. to 5. above.

   The project will integrate geomorphologic information with data on other environmental resources, opportunities and constraints for land-use planning. Its basis is the belief that adequate EIA can only be obtained through precise and reliable assessments of impacts on the different environmental components (physical, biological, aesthetic, socio-economic) and through the use of well tested, replicable integration methods.
