Cluster 2: Extended call for papers "QUALITY, REGULATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT"
Rome, Italy, 22-23 October 2010
Transportation is both fundamental for a growing economy as well as capable of generating unwanted negative by-effects. Public transportation is a key instrument to reduce the undesirable external negative effects of private transportation especially in cities where the great majority of agents is now concentrated. Transportation demand can no longer be simply satisfied by increasing infrastructure and, consequently, congestion is rising in both developed and developing world cities, producing substantial negative impacts on the environment and on the quality of life. Cluster: 1 Meeting - call for papers
Mons, Belgium, 10-11 December 2010
Much of transport economic analysis is developed within a static framework. For instance, in evaluation of an infrastructure investment, once an overall time scenario of economic evolution is set up, the analysis often proceeds on the basis of a calibrated static model on how travellers or shippers choose a transport solution (mode, means, route) at a set of successive points of time given the decision parameters (price, income, congestion, etc.) and matrixes of origin and destination as forecast within the time scenario (business as usual, high or low growth, etc.). The inauguration of High-Speed Rail (HSR) in Japan,
over 40 years ago, created a new transport network,
which since became the main mode of transport for most
long-distance journeys in that country. In Europe, the
HSR services which were launched about 20 years later
were capable of running also on the conventional rail
network, but nevertheless also created a new transport
network. The new transport network is unique in many
respects and has important and specific spatial
effects, on the territories where it traverses, as well
as those it bypass or haven't yet reached. For more
information please click here.
