Transportation is both fundamental for a growing economy as well as capable of generating unwanted negative by-effects. Public transportation is a key instrument to reduce the undesirable external negative effects of private transportation especially in cities where the great majority of agents is now concentrated. Transportation demand can no longer be simply satisfied by increasing infrastructure and, consequently, congestion is rising in both developed and developing world cities, producing substantial negative impacts on the environment and on the quality of life.
